Chapter Six

Piper stood in front of Ace’s desk in his office, watching him tap through patient charts on his iPad. They met at the start of every shift to debrief, but she was having trouble concentrating on what he said.

How was he just sitting there, coolly reading up on patients? It was as if last night had never happened for him. That was good. That was what she wanted, too, but…

Damn it. It wasn’t like she had feelings for him, or anything. No way. But now she knew just what that lean body looked like naked, and what those sensual lips of his could do.

A light sheen of perspiration broke out over her skin, causing her scrub shirt to cling to the skin of her back.

She shook it off. They’d had their fun.

Still, as she watched his fingers slide over the tablet’s surface, remembering how they’d traced over her skin, she found herself swallowing, hard.

“One last case before you can start your rounds.” Ace slid the tablet across the desk to her. Part of her was grateful that he was all business. And part of her, a little niggle in the back of her brain, was irritated that she was still thinking about him naked while he seemed to have put their little interlude behind him.

“Piper?” Ace cleared his throat, and she realized that she’d zoned out. Pressing her lips together, she dropped into the closest chair, reaching for the gleaming tablet.

Was that a hint of amusement in his eyes?

Surely not.

“Right.” Dropping her gaze to the tablet, she skimmed the information. “Lorena Matomoros from yesterday. Presented with disorientation, pale skin, glazed eyes, nausea, recurring loss of consciousness.”

This was a learning technique that Ace liked to use…he would discuss patients he’d encountered in the emergency room and see if Piper could figure out what their ailment was. It was a hard game, since she rarely was able to examine the person herself to form an opinion, instead relying on Ace’s observations.

In this case, though, she’d triaged the woman before her shift was done. Ace must have finished up with her when he’d returned to the hospital after he’d been at Score.

“You know what to do.” Leaning back in his leather chair, Ace studied her with those intense eyes. Her stare met his own and unexpected nerves rocketed through her.

Once, it wouldn’t have mattered so much if she was wrong. He’d explain the diagnosis to her, even if he was gruff bordering on rude.

This time? She wanted to be right, wanted to impress him.

Wanted him to know that her brain was as sexy as her body. Even if she shouldn’t be thinking that way at all.

“Patient’s daughter called an ambulance because she thought that her mother was having a seizure.” Slowly, Piper scanned the details on the tablet screen again. “And another possible answer would be that she was having a stroke.”

“Which one is your diagnosis?” The glint in his dark eyes challenged her, and she narrowed hers in return as she racked her brain, mentally flipping through reams of text from school.
